Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox cloud gaming is coming to iOS in 2021. In a new blog post today, the company says that cloud gaming as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will come to iOS via web browser in spring of 2021. This was first rumored in October. Microsoft had decided not to launch its game streaming service on iOS because of the App Store guidelines. Bringing cloud gaming to the iPhone and iPad via the web browser will allow Microsoft to skirt the App Store guidelines altogether....

Analytics firm Millennial Media, the second-largest mobile advertising platform behind Google, on Tuesday, released its monthly Mobile Mix report for November. Similar to their October survey that saw Android’s growth slowing (and iOS gaining). Compared to the summer period for November, both Apple’s and Research in Motion’s respective platform grew at the expense of Google. Specifically, Android went from 56 percent ad requests in October to 50 percent in November....

With Alfonso Cuarón’s win at last night’s Academy Awards for Roma, Mexican filmmakers have now claimed the Best Director Oscar five out of the last six years. Though Cuarón did take the Best Director prize for the second time in his career, his Roma was ultimately defeated for Best Picture by Peter Farrelly’s feel-good drama Green Book. The 57-year-old Cuarón got his start in filmmaking on Mexican television in the 1990s, often working alongside his friend Guillermo Del Toro (the two filmmakers and their other friend Alejandro González Iñárritu would later be known as The Three Amigos)....

The revelation was discovered by Twitter user Florian Beaubois, a Windows 11 user that also holds a Microsoft MVP certificate. In a tweet, Beaubois noted “Some people will go mad if Microsoft starts adding ads in explorer,” and showed an image he captured of a banner ad appearing at the top of a File Explorer window. The ad in question read “Write with confidence across documents, email, and the web with advanced writing suggestions from Microsoft Editor....

Microsoft announced a number of changes to its Office for iOS apps last week: deep Dropbox integration, dedicated iPhone versions, and editing and saving features without the need for an Office 365 subscription. All of those changes seem to be paying off, at least in the short term, as TechCrunch points out the new and updated Microsoft Office apps are now on top of the App Store charts. Currently on the iPhone App Store, Microsoft Word takes the #1 spot for Top Free iPhone Apps while Microsoft Excel ranks in at #8 and Microsoft PowerPoint follows at #10....

However, it’s no longer available via the Media Creation Tool (MCT) which Microsoft encouraged users to use if you didn’t want to wait for it to appear via Windows Update. We covered how to use the MCT to update manually. But the last statement we’ve seen from Microsoft is that the November Update has not been pulled from Windows Update, only from the MCT. When Microsoft launched its first full-on laptop, the Surface Book, it made a big point of claiming that the machine was twice as fast as a 13-inch MacBook Pro. Benchmark tests by PCWorld show that this claiming is misleading, though the dedicated graphics card available in certain models does pay off for some uses. The site’s tests showed that in pure CPU benchmarks, the MacBook Pro was actually slightly faster than the Surface Book....

Microsoft held an event today announcing a number of changes and upcoming launches. Two of the major pieces of news include a consumer version its communication and collaboration software “Teams” coming this year and its Office 365 suite rebranded as “Microsoft 365” plans. The company made improvements to the legacy Edge browser over the years. And eventually, it added support for a handful of extensions. But it never really took off. And because it was so deeply tied into the OS, it could only be updated via Windows Update. So, new features weren’t added as quickly as you’d expect from other browsers like Chrome or Firefox.
