Mike Colter is best known as the star of Marvel’s Luke Cage, but which other TV shows and movies has the actor been in? With Luke Cage, Mike Colter made history playing the first black superhero with his own TV show. His role as Luke Cage extended beyond his title series too, with Colter also appearing in character in other Marvel TV shows including Jessica Jones and The Defenders. Although those shows – alongside Luke Cage – have since come to an end, Colter was nominated for a handful of accolades including nods from the NAACP Image Awards and the Black Reel Awards.
Colter’s tenure as an MCU superhero is just one recent part of his long career, however. His first TV roles were playing bit parts in shows including medical drama ER and sitcom The Parkers and in 2004 he nabbed his first film role as boxer Big Willie Little in Clint Eastwood’s Academy-Award winning drama Million Dollar Baby. Interestingly, Colter also played three different one-off roles in the Law & Order franchise; a cop on trial for murder in Law & Order: Trial By Jury, a chauffeur in Law & Order: Criminal Intent and a Ugandan war criminal in Law & Order: SVU.
His big TV break came with a recurring role as drug kingpin Lemond Bishop on legal drama The Good Wife – a character he recently reprised in spin-off The Good Fight. Around the same time he was playing Bishop, Mike Colter also had a main role in The CW’s mystery thriller Ringer as Malcolm Ward – the Narcotics Anonymous sponsor of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character Bridget. Colter’s other prominent TV roles include FBI agent Nick Donovan in Kevin Williamson’s crime thriller The Following and ill-fated witch hunter David on American Horror Story: Coven. He also portrayed Agent Jameson Locke on the Ridley Scott produced web series Halo: Nightfall and Speaker of the House Miles Latham on TNT’s short-lived spy drama Agent X.
As for film roles, Colter played Will Smith’s dad in Men In Black 3 and DEVGRU operative Mike in Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-nominated war thriller Zero Dark Thirty. More recently, Colter starred in the sci-fi thriller Extinction alongside Michael Peña and Lizzy Caplan and played real-life political activist Daryle Lamont Jenkins in biographical drama Skin, about a reformed Neo-Nazi. He also recently starred as crime lord Darius in Deon Taylor’s action thriller Black And Blue.
Since Luke Cage came to an end in 2018, Mike Colter’s career hasn’t slowed down any. He’s currently starring as journalist turned priest-in-training David Acosta on the CBS supernatural drama Evil which was recently renewed for a second season and voiced DEA agent Brister on the Netflix anime Seis Manos. In the not-too-distant future, Colter will star in thriller movie Fatale and plays the title role in Patrick Gilles’ biographical drama I’m Charlie Walker.
