Michael Caine is easily one of the most impersonated actors in the world, but he personally thinks Tom Hanks does one of the best impressions of him. Tom Hanks first made a name for himself thanks to romantic fantasy Splash in 1984, but it was his roles in both Big and Turner & Hooch that helped make him a movie star. After a mild hiccup with the famous flop of The Bonfire of the Vanities in 1990, he would go on to a run of great movies, including Philadelphia and Saving Private Ryan.
Tom Hanks can jump back and forth between dramatic and comedic roles with ease, which his instantly iconic appearance as David S. Pumpkins on Saturday Night Live or his voice work in Toy Story 4 prove. Michael Caine is also a movie icon, with his decades-long career including greats like Get Carter, The Italian Job, Educating Rita, The Dark Knight, and many, many others. He has also freely admitted to taking movies just for the cheque involved, which explains the likes of The Swarm, Jaws The Revenge and Beyond The Poseidon Adventure.
Michael Caine remains a screen legend regardless of a few duds, but alongside actors like Sean Connery or Christopher Walken, he has to be one of the most impersonated actors in movie history. His distinct delivery has been easy fodder for comedians for years, with Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie) known for doing a particularly spot-on impression. To the surprise of many, however, Caine himself thinks Tom Hanks does the very best impression of his voice.
Michael Caine saw Tom Hanks do his impression on an episode of Saturday Night Live, and was impressed enough to declare him the best in his book Blowing the Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life. Hanks himself would later learn of this during a radio interview, which he took as a great honor and professed his lifelong admiration for the veteran star.
The end result should naturally be a buddy movie between Michael Caine and Tom Hanks, which sadly has yet to occur. Hanks is also able to pull off solid impressions of Clint Eastwood - who directed him in biopic Sully - and Meryl Streep. Tom Hanks also received acclaim for his performance as Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks and as the legendary Fred Rogers in 2019’s A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood. Maybe there’s a biopic of Michael Caine somewhere down the road too?
