Men in Black: International have jumped on the bandwagon, becoming the latest to poke fun at the recent Game of Thrones mistake. Last Sunday’s episode saw the characters mourning their dead and celebrating their defeat of The Night King and his army of the dead. It didn’t take long, however, for the remaining forces to turn their gaze south towards the ever-lingering threat posed by Cersei Lannister. The same couldn’t be said for the audience, however. Following a glaring mistake which saw a cup of what appeared to be Starbucks coffee left out on a table during a scene at Winterfell, social media was flooded with posts about it.

While a cup of Starbucks would fit right at home in the world - and offices - of the Men in Black, it’s impossible to explain away one turning up in Game of Thrones. Adapted from George R.R. Martin’s popular novels, the series is set in a fictional fantasy world based loosely on medieval Britain. Although HBO removed the mistake from future airings of the episode, the correction came after Starbucks enjoyed a wealth of free advertising. Nor did it halt the stream of memes the gaffe provoked - the most hilarious of which saw a fan edit a cup into Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Posted on the official Men in Black Twitter page, the new ad features Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, who play Agent H and Agent M, respectively. Dressed in the traditional M.I.B attire, they can be seen talking directly to the camera. After a brief clip from the film itself showing Hemsworth in action, the video zooms in to reveal a coffee cup in the background. With the words “GoT a mistake you want to forget” emblazoned on the screen, the video returns to the film’s two leads who are ready with a familiar Men in Black solution. In case there was any doubt to what the video was targeting with his parody, the specific spelling of “GoT” makes it abundantly clear. Often serving as an acronym for HBO’s popular fantasy series, of which the penultimate episode of the final season is set to air this weekend. Men in Black: International, however, will also star Liam Neeson, the voice of Kumail Nanjiani, and Emma Thompson. The latter will reprise the role of Agent O, bridging the gap between the original, Will Smith-starring trilogy and the spin-off.

The latest trailer delved deeper into the plot of the film, including Agent M’s backstory - detailing her 20-year journey from a little girl overlooked by agents when her parents’ memories are erased to a full-fledged agent herself. The trailer also teases the villains: a shape-shifting group of aliens known as The Hive which may have infiltrated the M.I.B itself. The new video, however, serves as a perfect example of the kind of humor fans can expect. While the original trilogy - or, at least, the first two - trafficked in deriving humor from cynicism and the absurdity of the world itself, it played things mostly straight through the characters. F. Gary Gray’s film is going for a more tongue-in-cheek, self-aware approach, similar to his adaptation of The Italian Job. The original M.I.B. films weren’t without references to other films, but the latest installment goes to a whole new level. Taking a leaf out of the Ryan Reynolds marketing handbook, Men in Black: International is clearly unafraid of savvily tapping into viral doses of recognizable, real-world pop culture.
