Victoria’s petrol prices are the highest in the country, just as the state prepares to emerge from lockdown.
Today in Sandringham, in Melbourne’s south-east, petrol was priced at a startling $1.84 per litre.
The NRMA’s Peter Khoury said the costs were unprecedented.
“These are the greatest prices Australia has ever seen, certainly the highest prices,” he added, “far above anything Melbourne has ever seen.”
“And, as much as we’d like to say that’s the end of it, we can’t even promise that.”
The high prices come as Victoria’s lockdown finally ends on Thursday night, allowing Melburnians to travel freely for the first time in months.
On the other hand, petrol may have an impact on travel, as filling up an average petrol tank currently costs over $60 more than it did 18 months ago.
Mr Khoury stated that the pricing was incompatible with the state’s need for people to spend money on businesses.
The issue is being seen across the country, with Sydney petrol prices hitting an all-time high yesterday, with unleaded costing more than $1.70 per litre on average.
The surge is claimed to be due to a rise in global oil prices as supply fails to keep up with demand when travel resumes following COVID-19-related lockdowns.
