The rescue dog stars of Lady and the Tramp are absolutely adorable in this video. Disney is set to release a live-action remake of the classic 1955 animated feature about the epic love story between two canines. The first trailer for the Lady and the Tramp remake was released today at D23.
Disney will launch its streaming service, Disney+, on November 12 and Lady and the Tramp will be immediately available when it does. The titular dogs, played by real pups, will be voiced by Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux. Sam Elliott, Ashley Jensen, Janelle Monáe and Benedict Wong have all also lent their vocal talents to the other members of Lady and the Tramp’s canine cast. As for the humans, Kiersey Clemons and Thomas Mann will play Darling and Jim Dear.
Variety has released this delightful video of Lady and the Tramp’s stars. The entire canine cast is comprised of rescue dogs. In an incredibly heartwarming twist, every one of the dogs was adopted after production wrapped. Check out the video of Rose (Lady) and Monte (Tramp) below. Monte appears to be a bit nervous, but it seems as though Rose is loving the attention. Both reactions likely mirror how the dogs’ onscreen counterparts would feel in a similar situation.
Several exciting projects were announced for Disney+ at this year’s D23, including shows centering on Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk. These series join an already impressive roster of Marvel content that will stream exclusively on Disney+. The first to air will be Falcon and Winter Soldier in Fall 2020. Although viewers will have to wait a while to catch a glimpse of any Marvel heroes, another highly anticipated show set to air at launch on November 12 is The Mandalorian.
With the astounding amount of original content planned for Disney+, it’s easy to look past yet another live-action remake of a classic animated feature. The recent slew of these has certain fans feeling that the movies are unnecessary additions to Disney’s catalog. Some of the earlier films like The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast appealed to audiences and critics alike. However, after Dumbo, Aladdin and most recently, The Lion King all released this year to more complaints than compliments, its easy to see that even Disney’s most ardent supporters are starting to feel some remake fatigue. The trend doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. Despite criticism of the films themselves, they remain profitable to the Mouse House, which explains why there are so many more on the way.
Regardless of how you feel about Disney’s growing obsession with live-action remakes, there is no denying that Lady and the Tramp has literally saved the lives of its canine cast, which goes a long way towards proving its value. In an industry that has a known track record of not looking out for the best interests of its animal actors, it’s truly inspiring to see that Disney has used this film as an opportunity to do some good. Rose and Monte certainly seem to be enjoying their time in the spotlight.
